Term Austrians Abroad

Austrians living abroad are Austrian citizens with their main place of residence abroad.

A person's principal residence refers to that place of accommodation which is deemed to be the center of the accommodation recipient's living relations.

The following criteria in particular are decisive for determining the center of a person's life relations:

  • Duration of stay
  • Location of the place of work or education
  • Residence of family members (especially children)

If these criteria apply to several residences, the principal residence is that residence to which the predominant close relationship exists.

The term "Herzensösterreicherinnen"/"Herzensösterreicher" refers to persons of Austrian descent who do not hold Austrian citizenship. These can be either former Austrian citizens or persons with at least one Austrian parent or grandparent who feel close to Austria.
