On-road practice – pre-training and basic training at a driving school
Usually, applicants may start their pre-training and basic training at a driving school (→ WKO) no more than six months before reaching the minimum age applicable for the relevant licence category, e.g. for category B they may start at the age of 17 years and six months. They may only submit an application to carry out on-road practice once they have completed their pre-training and basic training.
In general, these rules also apply to EU citizens in Austria.
The pre-training and basic training consist of eight theory sessions and six 50-minute practical sessions. A further six practical driving sessions must be undertaken after completing on-road practice. Learners are gradually introduced to on-road driving and the rules of the road. Supervisors do not need to attend this training.
In addition, learners and their supervisors must attend one theory session regarding on-road practice.
Completion of this training is confirmed by the driving school, and this confirmation must be provided when applying for permission to carry out on-road practice.
Emergency life-saving training and first aid course are usually organised by your driving school (→ WKO) with an external provider.
