Working in the non-EU area

General information

As regulations regarding entry, right of residence, work permits and social security vary from country to country, it is advisable to first contact the foreign representative authority in Austria. They can provide detailed information and helpful tips for taking up employment abroad.

The Working Holiday Programme

The Working Holiday Programmes with Argentina, Australia, Chile, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, South Korea, Taiwan and the USA enable Austrians between the ages of 18 and 30 to pursue any occupation during a six- or twelve-month holiday stay in these countries. The applicable wage and working conditions as well as social security regulations must be observed.

Working holiday programmes are based on reciprocity, i.e. persons between the ages of 18 and 30 from the aforementioned partner countries and regions may also work in Austria during a working holiday under the same conditions.

Depending on the length of the planned stay, a visa must be applied for at the foreign representative authority in Austria.
